martha’s vineyard

This week’s Wedding Wednesday story comes to us from Regina and James:

James and his family introduced me to vineyard vines a few years ago, and it was very fitting with my new style since I had moved from suburban central Massachusetts to the seacoast of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. James (having grown up in York, Maine) has always loved living near the ocean and dressing the part in bright colors from vineyard vines. After we had been together for a year, I took him on his very first trip to Martha’s Vineyard, where we were caught on camera wearing our vineyard vines sweaters at The Seafood Shanty (and we were featured in the catalog!).

When we were planning our wedding, we knew without a doubt that vineyard vines had to play a part! We went with a subtle starfish theme and hues of pink and navy adorned our reception hall. We chose the York Harbor Inn in York, Maine as the site of our festivities and we lucked out with one of the only sunny days in May of 2011. We danced the night away to a live band, and I even serenaded my groom to Stevie Wonder’s ‘For Once in My Life’. Our guests feasted on lobster and shrimp and ended their evening fighting for the last cupcake on the cupcake tower! In lieu of wedding favors, we made a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help find a cure and in recognition of my 21 years of living with Type 1 diabetes. At the after party in the pub downstairs, I changed into my vineyard vines Caroline dress and we closed the bar! We jetted off to Bermuda the following day. We’re currently living happily ever after in Newburyport, MA.

Our ringbearer, Cameron, patiently waiting for the bride!

Happiness caught on film!

The fun doesn’t leave Martha’s Vineyard when the summer season ends. Anglers of all ages flocked to the seas during September and October for the 66th annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. vineyard vines was proud to support this age-old island tradition benefiting the MV Derby Scholarship Fund which provides over $30,000 a year to Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School graduates pursuing studies in marine sciences. Although, big winners were not able to win plots of land as they did when the derby first got its start, lucky fishermen did have a chance at winning grand prizes and of course bragging rights for the rest of the year. Congratualtions to all who participated and we’ll be dreaming of big fish until next fall!

Now that the leaves have started to turn and many of us have begun to trade our swim trunks for Shep Shirts, I can’t help but look back on another amazing summer on Martha’s Vineyard.

Graduation day is a bittersweet day for any college grad, but knowing I was island-bound for one last full summer made saying goodbye to St. Michael’s College a bit easier. As a summer intern for What’s Up Martha, paddle boarding and promoting was all part of the job description. I also worked for a great vineyard family with some insanely cute kids. You could find us on any given hot summer day crab catching and minnow chasing at our favorite spot, Fuller Street beach. (If we were lucky enough to find a parking spot!)

It’s a different kind of lifestyle on the island, you know, the sand in your toes, outdoor shower, “Meet me at the Shanty”, kind of life. After a couple of summers, you’re a familiar face and I know more than a few “summer kids”who scratched their “real life” plans and have simply never left. (Sound familiar? I think Shep and Ian had the right idea…)

Whether it was heading to the Vineyard Cup regatta ball or lazy Sundays at Norton Point, I’ll hold on to those vineyard memories and people for as long as I can. As the first day of fall rolls in, I’ll start my countdown to June 22nd now, only 277 more days until summer 2012!

The second annual  ”Race the Whale” event took this place this past Sunday on Martha’s Vineyard in conjunction with our friends at WhatsUpMartha. Stand Up Paddleboarding, known as “SUP” has been taking root all across the East Coast and growing in popularity more and more. You might recognize it as we’ve featured the activity it in a few catalog shots in the past few months. With local help from WuzSupSports, vineyard vines was able to get over 100 people out to demo and test this fun filled sport. Complimentary lessons and proper instruction helped get a lot of “whale pods” out on the water and navigating the course. There were plenty of vineyard vines sunglasses and whale hats to go around for attendees and spectators.

Photos of the event can be found at this link: CLICK HERE FOR MORE PHOTOS – A big thanks again to the great staff of WuzSupSports for their time and generosity. Looking forward to getting ourselves back out on the water soon!

As part of our ongoing relationship with the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust, we were proud to present this year’s Generations Picnic at the Daniel Fisher House in Edgartown!  The Picnic was a huge hit with families on the Vineyard with food and beverage for all and tons of activities for kids! As a proud partner, we provided specialty VV coloring books and crayons for all the kids in attendance as well as whale hats, sunglasses, stickers and tattoos! Some of the event’s highlights included MV Sharks T-ball, face painting, hay rides and a magician, etc.  If you were at the picnic we hope you had a fantastic time.  If not, we recommend you add it to your calendar for next year!

vineyard vines is on the move! This year we have opened stores in Charlotte, NC, McLean, VA, and Palm Beach Gardens, FL, and with another on the way in Newport, CA, there is alot to be excited about! That being said, this week’s story comes to us from Nicole, who, while vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard, got in touch with our roots.

“On the day that I visited the Vineyard, I was really enjoying the lifestyle, but the real reason I was there…was to shop at vineyard vines! My friend Colby, who has family on Chappy and is familiar with Edgartown, wouldn’t tell me where the store was; instead, she surprised me with the location and I screamed when I saw the sign! And of course we had to snap a photo to document my first trip. The shop was so beachy and preppy, and I left with some great pieces. From the great staff to the atmopshere (there was even a girl outside serving a vineyard vines lemonade stand!), it absolutely completed my stay, and it has inspired me to always remember the simple, classic things in life. It was truly a great day in the good life!”

Two days on the Vineyard surrounded by delicious food? Sign us up! We were excited to sponsor this year’s Taste of the Vineyard on Martha’s Vineyard! The event consisted of a food stroll featuring a sampling of the island’s best cuisine, followed by an intimate gala dinner. Over a thousand people flock to this event each year, put on in association with the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust. We’re already looking forward to next year!

A-Capella: Vineyard Style!

February 24, 2011

The Vineyard Sound, Martha’s Vineyard’s favorite a-cappella group, has been entertaining crowds since 1992. Each summer, 10 college guys get together on the island and learn a repertoire of 30+ songs and perform all over the island from their nightly shows at local churches, to cocktail parties, birthday parties, fund-raisers and everything in between. Featuring stellar vocals, engaging humor, and incredible musicians, the award winning a-cappella group has grown to be the most popular evening events to attend on Martha’s Vineyard for families and islanders alike.

As of the winter of 2009, the Vineyard Sound is a 501 (c)(3) non profit organization providing high quality entertainment for the island of Martha’s Vineyard. This Sunday night at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in New York City’s historic West Village will be the group’s first ever fundraiser in the form of an alumni concert. With over 24 alumni flying and driving in from all over the country, the group will put together a set of the Vineyard Sound’s greatest hits that have been sung throughout the group’s 19 year history.  The show begins at 7:30 pm and the admission is a $10 donation at the door which earns a raffle ticket for incredible prizes throughout the show.

We hope to see you there.

Recap: Kite The Whale!

August 23, 2010

Rob from WhatsUpMartha gives a recap of this past weekend’s kitesurfing event on Martha’s Vineyard!

This past weekend, vineyard vines and WhatsUpMartha teamed up again to put on a series of Kitesurfing races on Martha’s Vineyard. The event was titled “Kite the Whale” and competitors soared through the air and across the water on a burly and windy day. Prizes and giveaways were provided for the racers and their ages ranged from 25 to 65 years old!

For the spectators of the event, custom vineyard vines corn-hole boards were provided for their use and enjoyment. Although, it does get a bit tricky tossing a corn-hole bean bag in 16 knot wind! Despite all of this, there was nothing but smiles from the spectators and competitors as it’s always a good time with WhatsUpMartha and vineyard vines, especially huddled under a vineyard vines tent!

The sport of kitesurfing is growing at a fast clip on Martha’s Vineyard and many other coastal areas along the East Coast. vineyard vines is excited to be a part of yet another “sailing” community and supporting the sport as it grows in popularity. Martha’s Vineyard has become a desired destination for many kiters as the layout of the island supports plenty of areas to sail.
