VV at the PGA Show 2012

February 21, 2012

The vineyard vines golf recently made a stop in Florida to show our 2012 golf line at the annual PGA Show in the Orlando Convention Center. The team showed our golf clothing line to over 100 new and old accounts in the three days.  Many more attendees stopped in to see the our popular custom designed club belts and ties.  The golf line has a number of new products that will be showing up online and in golf shops this spring and summer! Stay tuned!

This week’s story comes to us from Rob Martin, who has gotten into the best looking habit there is!

“Going to the beach means more than just a relaxing week in the sun with my beautiful wife, it also means a new pair of vineyard vines Chappy Trunks each time we go.  I bought my first pair of Chappies several years ago and we’ve made it a tradition to get a new pair before each beach trip. I refuse to wear any other swimsuit!  The good life look can’t be beat and they are perfect for our favorite beach in Seaside/Seagrove, FL.  Mandi looks forward to helping me pick out my new swim trunks each summer and she’s slowly filling my closet up with just about every item of clothing y’all make, I couldn’t be happier!”

All aboard the Chappy Train!

Profile: Sarah Sams & Ethan

February 16, 2012

The family that paddles together stays together.

When Sarah’s not tending to island appetites over at Pineapples Restaurant, her famous ocean-side institution, she oversees waterfront operations of a different sort as Director of Outdoor Pursuits, which might as well be Chief Fun Officer as far as we’re concerned. From paddleboarding to sailing to offshore trampolining (yep, offshore trampolining), whatever floats your boat, Sarah can make it happen.

And if she can’t, her second in command—seven-year-old son Ethan—can. We’ve caught him demonstrating his latest beach break-dancing moves on shore, but most days you can usually spot him maneuvering the swells on a paddleboard right alongside his mom. How’s that for a spending a little quality time together?

Thanks to our Whale Reps Daniel and Katheryn at Cornell for a great event!

The Getting to Zero: AIDS Charity Dinner was a huge success. The event was co-sponsored by the brothers of Phi Sigma Kappa and the sisters of Alpha Epsilon Phi.

The event attracted over 160 attendees and vineyard vines made a splash at the event. Each ticket provided the guests with a three-course meal accompanied by musical entertainment. Overall, the event raised over $2,200 and all proceeds were donated to end the AIDS epidemic as well as uplift the lives of those affected by it.

Share Your Story: Footloose

February 10, 2012

This week’s story comes to us from Reaney Critchell whose son, Carsen, kicked off his Sunday shoes and threw on a whale hat to cut loose at the Opera House Cup!

“We go to Nantucket every summer for the Opera House Cup.  Carsen’s dad sails the race in an Alerion with one of his best childhood friends.  The kids are all great buddies.  It is an annual celebration of summer, friends, sailing, regattas, and family get togethers.  What better place to wear vineyard vines! The photo was taken at the Opera House Cup celebration and awards ceremony.  The whole family wore their vineyard vines attire for the occasion.  It takes place on Jetties Beach under a beautiful tent with gorgeous views. It is a fantastic evening with great music and stories swirling about the day out on the water.  Carsen, (my son in the photo), spent a lot of time at the vineyard vines tent talking to the girls behind the table.  They were great.  Loaded us up with stickers, sunglasses, and hats.  Carsen donned them all and went out on the dance floor.  He is usually shy but the vineyard vines accessories really helped give him the courage to get out there and show his best moves.  Thanks for your awesome clothing and adding to our annual Opera House Cup festivities!”

Profile: Jesse Golon

February 9, 2012

In some professions, being a drifter is a good thing.

Jesse Golon, founder of Abaco Paddleboard, has, in our opinion, the best (standup) job you could ever have. A tour guide, entrepreneur and all-around Abacos ambassador, Jesse discovered the islands best-kept secret, its surf, back in the ’80s, and eventually bought his own slice of paradise. Now he calls the Abacos and its pristine waters home.

Jesse’s passion for life and the water comes through in the clean lines of every paddleboard he turns out and in the way he approaches each surf break and business pursuit. As Jesse might say, board meetings happen all the time in the islands…they just require a different kind of suit.

We are reaching new heights at vineyard vines! As we prepare to say goodbye to the cold of winter, and propel into Spring, one young rogue, Rob Uhrlass, is simply not ready to let go.

“I have always been about pushing the envelope. Whether it be skiing (mild), kite boarding (moderate) or spelunking (totally crazy), it’s always taken just a little extra to get me psyched up. So when I was presented with the opportunity to climb Mt. Washington (and no, not in my SUV), I just had to take it. Naturally, I had to bring my VV along for the climb! While vineyard vines normally appeals more to my islanding side, my new fleece jacket was the perfect layering piece for a blustery climb. Plus, I obviously wanted to look fresh as pictures would be a must when we hit the summit. Whether down at sea level or 6,000 feet in the air, a thanks to vineyard vines for making me look so good, and every day feel this good!”

Check out this full report from Key West Raceweek! VV sponsored Team Tangent sailed brilliantly (and had some fun while doing it!)

KWRW Day 1
After two days of practice in 20+ knots of breeze, the Tangent crew was fully prepared for the windy racing on Monday. In the first race of the day, the team had a tough start but fought their way back to second place just behind L’Outrage, a Beneteau 10m that corrected over Tangent by less than a minute. Tangent got off the line cleanly in the second race and came in first, after 5 legs of close racing. Tangent tied L’Outrage on points for the day but won the tie breaker to give them a first place for the day.

KWRW Day 2
The race committee moved the the start time for Tuesday an hour earlier and pushed the fleet to get in three races in the breeze, due to the forecast for lighter air on Wednesday and Thursday. The breeze on Tuesday ranged from 8-12 knots over the course of the day, staying steady enough to complete the three scheduled races.  Tangent had another strong day, finishing with two firsts and a second after a long day of racing. The competition with L’Outrage remained close, with the two boats finishing within 20 seconds of each other in two of the races. Tangent won the day for the second day in a row, and is winning the PHRF 2 class, 1 point ahead of 2nd place, and 9.5 points ahead of third. Crew morale is high, and the team has named themselves the “whale pod” as we travel around key west in our bicycle pack. Look out for our “tail flip” hand signals in pictures from the tent soon.

KWRW Day 3
Racing canceled due to no breeze. The “Whale Pod” spent the morning making the sure boat was ready for Thursday racing, and then the afternoon exploring Key West…one watering hole at a time. :)

KWRW Day 4
Day 4 of race week was a tough day for the Tangent crew. During the pre-start sequence of race 1, Tangent got into a head on situation with another boat on the line. Due to mixed signals from both boats, the two vessels collided, resulting in damage to Tangent’s port bow and stanchions. Both boats continued to race, but after a protest was heard back on land, the race resulted in a DSQ (+12 points) for all parties involved. The crew was a bit shook up after the collision, and wound up over early at the start of the 2nd race. After going back to clear the line, the crew fought their way back to a 3rd place finish and calmed their nerves. Tangent finished the day with a 2nd place finish in the 3rd race of the day, and held on to second overall in the standings despite the DSQ.

KWRW Day 5
The final day of race week was a fun one for owner/skipper Gerry Taylor and the rest of the Tangent crew (Cliff Stagg, Tommy Mercer, Jay Corcoran, Mark Reddinger, Mark Whitson, Rose Beberhard, Chuck O’Malley, Chris Crockett, and Sprague Brodie). The breeze was back up, and the competition was tight. Recognizing that the DSQ from Thursday put Tangent out of the running for first, the team focused on staying ahead of Kalevala, the third place boat that was just 1 point back. The team finished the regatta with a 2nd and a 1st due to their fast downwind spinnaker and staysail work, securing the 2nd place spot overall for the PHRF class.
